“Japanese culture … is a great intellectual challenge and a gorgeous sensual experience.” — Alain Ducasse
These images explore the harmonies of the loud silence and rich beauty that one can experience as an outsider to Japan and its culture. They combine a seemingly practiced choreography of the dizzying pace of city life with the deeper, more sensuous experience that permeate the country’s side streets, nighttime scenes and translucent textures.
These images were captured independently over the course of several trips to Japan between 2012-2016, during which the photographer worked as a photo-documentarian for GAKKO, a series of summer camps that explore interdisciplinary learning for high school students around the world.
